HYPNOBIRTHING®
WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
DEFINITION
THE HYPNOBIRTHING® ADVANTAGE
SOME OF WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A HYPNOBIRTHING® COURSE

HYPNOBIRTHING®

Teaching mothers and birth companions techniques for safe and satisfying birthing through guided imagery, visualisation, and special breathing.

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

Hypnosis is a naturally induced state of relaxed concentration – a state of mind and body in which we communicate suggestions to our subconscious mind. This part of our mind influences what we think, how we feel, and the choices we make. It can actually control pain.

There is no magic to achieving success with self-hypnosis. Almost anyone who chooses to can reach deep relaxation and redirected focus.

When having your baby with
HypnoBirthing®, what you will experience is similar to the daydreaming or focusing that occurs when you are engrossed in a book or staring at a fire. You will be conversant and in good-spirits, totally relaxed but fully in control. You will be aware of your body’s contractions, but will be able to determine the extent to which you feel the surge. You will experience your birthing in an atmosphere of calm and relaxation, without fear and tension that cause pain. Your body’s natural anaesthesia (endorphins) will replace stress hormones that create pain.

When it is time for your baby to be born, you will be fully awake and involved.

DEFINITION

HypnoBirthing® is as much a philosophy as it is a technique. It is a rewarding, relaxing, stress free method of birthing that is based on the belief that all babies should come into this world in an atmosphere of gentility, calm and joy. When a mother is properly prepared for birthing physically, mentally and spiritually, she can experience that sort of joy, birthing her baby in an easier, more comfortable, and often, even pain free, manner. Through a well-thought-out program of deep relaxation, self-hypnosis, and education, HypnoBirthing® returns to a woman the art of birthing in a way that allows her to summon her natural birthing instincts and to birth her baby in safety and with ease. HypnoBirthing® is based on the belief that severe discomfort does not need to be a natural accompaniment of birthing.

THE HYPNOBIRTHING® ADVANTAGE

Eliminates the Fear-Tension-Pain syndrome before, during and after birthing.
Reduces, and often of labour by several hours and allows the birthing mother to utilise the natural pulsations of her body to breathe her baby down to the crowning stage, rather than pushing for long, exhausting periods of time. Reduces the risk of pelvic floor damage.
Brings the mother, the baby, and the birthing companion (father) together in a wonderful prenatal, perinatal and postnatal bonding experience eliminates, the need for chemical anaesthesia, episiotomy, and other interventions
Lessens fatigue during labour, leaving the mother fresh, awake, and energised as she brings her baby into the world.
Shortens the thinning and opening phase.
The birthing companion is an integral part of birthing, not an onlooker.
Almost entirely eliminates postnatal discomfort and “baby blues”.
Babies are better adjusted and happier, resulting in better eating and sleeping routines.
Mothers don’t run the risk of hyperventilating from shallow breathing.
Birthing is returned to the safe, beautiful, peaceful experience that Nature intended.

Learning that our words shape our experience – therefore use words that more accurately describe what is happening during the birthing experience in a gentler, non-medical manner. Words used evoke an emotion of feeling good, rather than fear and a lack of understanding

e.g. pressure/sensation/tightening/power vs. pain
e.g. practice labour/pre-labour warm-ups vs. false labour
e.g. birthing process vs. labour
